With enough wind to make things hard, and pressure that began with Charlie's strong opening pull on Roselle, the ride was single file even during its opening miles.

...When riding through Payton's neighborhood, Vince floated the suggestion that the group head north on Old Sutton versus going further west on Penny due to the very rough conditions on Penny. After much banter, this course was taken, and the replacement of the climb coming off Lake-Cook with the hill on Spring Creek at the west end of the Hill-n-Dale Farm proved to break even more legs. Through the hills the pace remained high, and coming off the StairStep, the front of the bunch was splintered in three or four different little groups, eventually re-grouping on Ridge.

Route Change

<dc:subject>HarperLog</dc:subject>

Due to construction at Dundee and Northwest Highway, there will be a route change until at least the end of June.

...Once there, Jason missed a turn at the top of the false flat by the cemetary, but the descent and rise at the fork in the round would prove to be Duane's undoing.

...After crossing Northwest Highway, Steve, Brian/Bryan, and Jason waited, but Steve's amazing effort on the last section of Cuba prior to Ela split the group a final time. This time, Steve, Brian/Bryan, and Jason steadily continued sharing the pacemaking efforts until the finish, where Jason, the worst sprinter of the three, made the commitment at 200 meters and held off the other two who did not contest the victory.

Also, from Greg Gohman, Bandit Cross is not the only cool set of cross races. He raced in Michigan at the Grand Rapids stop of the Kisscross Series (whose motto is taken from Where the Wild Things Are). The race was held on the side of ski hill and featured an "optional" creek crossing (or you could ride over to a bridge and cross there, though it'll take you longer).

The ride continued at a steady pace as it rode west down Penny and throughout most of the northbound check--until the ride reached Lake-Cook Road.

...After re-grouping and getting some help on the next rollers, Jason led the group through the turn, and the entire peoloton navigated these new roads safely. ... ...As one might expect with a small group, the ride was run at a steadier pace than a traditional Harper, though the pace remained relatively high most of the ride as a handful of riders took turns going "medium hard" on the front of the group. Other than a four-rider split that occurred in Payton's neighborhood, this tempo allowed some riders to work hard just sitting on while others pulled. ... Though the climbs of Roller 2 and the StairStep were taken with a steady, measured rhythm, the group nevertheless rolled up a to level train crossing at Northwest Highway (again!) ... From there, only seven riders were left together--a group of active racers who one might expect at the front and Tom, a Wheeling Wheelmen strongman.

It grew so large that simple updates became difficult and time consuming experiences as the entire file needed to be saved and, at times, re-published through FTP.

While there were noticeable absentees in the forms of MetLife's regular HarperRide representative, the majority of the North Branch riders, and a number of Team BBC's powerhouses, new riders joined the group today as did riders who have not been seen often this year.

...The group rode a steady tempo until Robert Kron decided to launch an all-out effort up the StairStep as Andy, in his first HarperRide of the year, hung on all the way over the top. ... While the first chasers were taking the turn fairly easy, those right behind were not, and with too much speed from the descent, one rider lost control and took another straight across the road and into the ditch on the far side of the road. Luckily for both riders, when they landed, it was in the grass at the side of the road, and both the riders and their bikes were bruised but not significantly damaged.

...When the ride resumed, the pack picked up HarperRide's very own model on his red and white Cervélo, and before reaching Northwest Highway, both Andy and Robert were back in the fold after realizing that the gap shouldn't have gone from three seconds to three minutes in the space of less than three kilometers.

The touring pace continued all the way across Rt. 59 when the pace did pick up along Penny Road as the group raced through that section of the ride before things settled down once again until the ride reached the hills.

...Through this section, two North Branch riders hung just off the front, using a horse trailer to provide a draft that would keep them away from the group at 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. ... ...Of course, anyone wearing a wool national team jersey from decades ago did need to show a clean pair of wheels to the rest of the group and this was done on multiple occasions by Team Mack's leader for the HarperRide.
